Jesus Christ Superstar premiers in Berlin at a unique venue

The rock musical will premiere at Tempelhof Airport Hangar 4 on 19th September.

With Jesus Christ Superstar, the big opening production of the Komische Oper Berlin will take place at Tempelhof Airport for the third time, after The Raft of the Medusa and MESSIAH.

Built between 1936 and 1941, the airport was the largest building in the world at the time, with 307,000 square meters of building space and a roof that could hold up to 80,000 spectators at air shows. While the airport was still used for monumental self-staging during National Socialism, it became a symbol of freedom in the post-war period with the Airlift. Since its closure in 2008, the seven hangars have housed refugees, social projects and cultural and sporting events, among other things.

At the beginning of the season ok Komische Oper Berlin, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar will premiere at Hangar 4. Director Andreas Homoki and set designer Philipp Stölzl create the production as a monumental rock show with around 350 dancers. The musical direction of the show is Koen Schoots.

The cast is lead by John Arthur Greene/Ryan Vona as Jesus Christ and Sasha Di Capri/Ryan Shaw as Judas Iscariot joined by Ilay Bal Arslan as Mary Magdalene, Kevin (a) Walker as Pontius Pilate, Jens Larsen/Daniel Dodd-Ellis as Caiphas, Michael Nigro as Annas, Oedo Kuipers as Peter, Dante Sáenz as Simon Zealotes, Jörn-Felix Alt as Kind Herod, Manuel Lopez as Priest1/Apostole, Gerd Archilles as Priest2/Apostole, Thomas Tucker as Priest3/Apostole, Masengu Kanyinda Soul Girl1/Ensemble, Amelia Francis as Soul Girl2/Ensemble, Coreena Brown as Soul Girl3/Ensemble.
